  • Brother: The PIE word was *bʰréh₂tēr. The accent was on the first syllable. The *t became *þ via Grimm’s Law. Because the PIE accent came right before the consonant in question, Verner’s Law did not apply. The *þ remained voiceless. Result: Old English brōþor.
